The Period Project

Removing the stigma of being female.

Period poverty – the inability to afford necessary period products like pads, tampons, and menstrual cups – affects 1 in 7 women in Wisconsin living below the Federal Poverty Level according to the Alliance for Period Supplies. The lack of access to these basic hygiene supplies often forces women and girls to miss school, work, or other essential commitments.

Period poverty is not just a health issue; it is an equity issue rooted in stigma, gender inequality, and economic insecurity. When people cannot manage their periods safely, their education, confidence, and opportunities suffer. Addressing period poverty through policy change and access to free menstrual products helps ensure that no one is held back simply because they menstruate.
